Court of Appeal rules SAITM degree lawful

Sri Lanka's Court of Appeal today (31) directed the Sri Lanka Medical Council (SLMC) to grant provisional registration to the medical graduates of the South Asian Institute of Technology and Medicine (SAITM).

The Court of Appeal held that medical students graduating from SAITM private university in Malabe have the right to register with the Sri Lanka Medical Council, the statutory body established to ensure the maintenance of academic and professional standards.

The decision was made by Court of Appeal president Justice Vijith Mallalgoda and Justice S. Thurairajah, after considering a writ filed by a graduating student Malsha Suriarachchi in 2015.

The court's decision to allow SAITM medical graduates to obtain provisional registration with SLMC comes despite the protests by Marxist party Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna affiliated Inter-University Students' Federation and Government Medical Officers' Association (GMOA)
