Faiszer accepts delimitation report

Minister of Provincial Councils and Local Government Faiszer Musthapha yesterday accepted the report compiled by the Delimitation Appeals Committee. The report is to be gazetted soon.

United National Party (UNP) member in the Delimitation Appeals Committee (DAC), Misbah Sattar, was the last to sign the Committee Report.

Earlier this month Musthapha refused to accept the report as representatives of the United National Party (UNP), Misbah Sattar and United People's Freedom Alliance (UPFA), Saliya Matthew had not signed the report. Asoka Peiris, Saliya Matthew, Misbah Sattar, Upul Kumarapperuma and Professor Balasubara-maniyam Pillai are the five members of the Committee.

Meanwhile, Party leaders and members of the Delimitation Appeals Committee on 9 January agreed that the report of the Commission should be handed over to the Minister of Provincial Councils and Local Government Faiszer Musthapha, who will gazette the report. Political party leaders also agreed to meet again after 23 January to come up with an intermediate mechanism and legal amendments, which all parties can agree upon, that are necessary to hold local government elections.
