PC Polls (Amendment) Bill passed

The third reading of the Provincial Council (PC) Elections (Amendment) Bill passed in Parliament a short while ago with a two-thirds majority. The Bill was passed with 159 MPs voting for it and 34 against.

Earlier, the second reading of the Bill passed with 154 MPs voting for it and 43 against.

Mathews falls injured again!

Former Captain Angelo Mathews might miss the first test against Pakistan, it is reported.

This is because he encountered an injury during practice sessions today.

He sustained injuries in his calf, it is reported.

Lalith, Anusha released on bail

Former presidential secretary Lalith Weeratunga and TRC’s former director general Anusha Palpita were today released on bail by Colombo High Court Judge Gihan Kulatunga.

They were earlier sentenced to three years rigorous imprisonment after they were found guilty of misappropriating Rs.600 million belonging to the TRC and using it to distribute ‘Sil Redi’ during the 2015 presidential election campaign.

Sarana Gunawardena further remanded

Former Petroleum Industries Deputy Minister and former Chairman of Development Lotteries Board (DLB) Sarana Gunawardena was ordered to be remanded till October 2, today.

He is alleged to have misused a state vehicle valued over Rs.8 million, while he was serving as the Chairman of Development Lotteries Board during the previous regime.

Terror on the Tube - Parsons Green terror attack

LONDON: At least 22 people were injured when a suspected terrorist set off an improvised explosive device on a London subway train during the Friday morning rush hour. It is the fifth attack this year.

Police appealed for photos and information, and had no word on the whereabouts of the perpetrator as a manhunt appeared to be under way. Images of a small fire in a white bucket with protruding wires were broadcast by Sky News, which said the device had probably failed to detonate fully. It may have had a timer, Sky reported.
