SC affirms Geetha cannot be an MP

A Supreme Court five-judge-bench headed by Chief Justice Priyasath Dep today unanimously ruled that Galle district parliamentarian Geetha Kumarasinghe is not qualified to be elected as a Member of Parliament since she holds dual citizenship.

The Supreme Court upheld the Court of Appeal judgment dated May 3 and its order in the nature of writ of Quo Warranto declaring that Galle District MP Geetha Kumarasinghe is disqualified to be a member of parliament and thus not entitled to hold office as a Member of Parliament.

DonaldTrump to terminate US green card lottery after NY attack

President Donald Trump said he would end the popular US green card lottery as police said a radicalised Uzbek man staged the deadly truck ramming in New York after entering the country under the program.

“The terrorist came into our country through what is called the ‘Diversity Visa Lottery Program,’ a Chuck Schumer beauty,” Trump tweeted. “I want merit based.”

Ranjan appointed Gampaha UNP Organiser

Deputy Minister Ranjan Ramanayake was appointed as the United National Party (UNP) Organiser for Gampaha District by Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe today.

Addressing the media in the Parliament premises, Minister Ramanayake said he was asked to be removed from his former organiser post following several petitions received by the party which had claimed that he was struggling against several under world groups.

Jaffna HC bans all forms of animal sacrifices at Kovils

Jaffna High Court Judge M. Illanchelian has issued an order prohibiting animal sacrifices at temples in Jaffna.

In that Order, the Judge has directed the Deputy Inspector General of Police for Jaffna to prevent animal sacrifices at Hindu temples and to arrest anyone found involved in the animal sacrifice ritual at Hindu temples.

The All Island Saiva Maha Saba had filed a case in the Jaffna High Court seeking an order prohibiting animal sacrifices at Hindu temples.

Meteor explosion cause for bright light, sound in SP

Colombo University Physical Science Department Prof. Chandana Jayaratne confirmed that the bright light and sound which was heard from the Southern Province (SP) this evening was because of an explosion caused by a meteor.

Speaking to the News he said the explosion was known as a 'fireball explosion' and occurs after an astroid enters the earth’s atmosphere.

No need of a new Constitution or Amendments

The Karaka Maha Sangha Sabha, of the Malwatu & Asgiriya Chapters today decided that there was no necessity of a new Constitution or amendments to the present Constitution of the country and urged to stop the Constitution drafting process.

The decision has been taken during a special meeting held at the Dalada Maligawa, Kandy yesterday evening, with the participation by the members of the Karaka Maha Sangha Sabha of the Asgiriya and Malwatu Chapters led by Anunayake of the Malwatte Maha Vihare, Ven. Dimbulkumbure Wimaladharma Thera, Anunayakes of the Asgiriya Maha Vihare Ven. Wedaruwe Upali Thera and Anamaduwe Sri Dammadassi Nayaka Thera.
