CMC blacklist “Live Events” for tax evasion

The Mayor of Colombo A. J. M. Muzammil had blacklisted the Company that organized Enrique concert for not settling the entertainment tax of Rs.29 Million.

The Treasury Department of the Colombo Municipal Council on December 23 filed acase against the organizers of live concert  by Latin music idol Enrique Iglesias held on December 20  at the CR&FC Grounds for failing to pay nearly Rs. 30 million in taxes.

It is reported that entertainment tax amounting to Rs. 29,125,845 has allegedly been unpaid by the organizers of the event.

The organizers had paid Rs.6.4 million to the CMC as tax on the income from the sale of tickets.

All the tickets had to be approved and sealed by the CMC. But only a few tickets had been given to the CMC for approval and sealing.

Tickets had been priced at Rs. 5000, 10,000, 25,000 and 35,000.

However  the former Sri Lankan cricketers Kumar Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardena ; Directors of LiveEvents.Lk, which organized the event, while issuing a statement on December 28 addressed several issues raised regarding “Enrique’s 'Love and Sex' “concert held in Colombo.

“With regards to recent reports concerning Live Events and Municipal entertainment taxes, we categorically state the company remains transparent and ethical in all operations.” they said in their statement posted on their official Facebook page.

They further said that Live Events will continue to ensure full compliance with all relevant tax commitments and is providing all necessary information to the Colombo Municipal Council, in order to clarify facts and the way forward.

“Accountability and integrity is paramount to us and we believe it to be the same for the organizers.” They added.
