Omanthai Camp not Moved – Army

There is no truth in reports that the Omanthai Army Camp has been removed, military Spokesman Brigadier Roshan Seneviratne said yesterday.

He added that 18 acres of land near the camp were handed over to the Vavuniya District Secretary.

"These areas include 10 acres to the west of the Omanthai checkpoint," he said.

However the camp will remain, Seneviratne said. Vavuniya District Secretary MBR Pushpakumara said some lands were handed over last Tuesday to families which originally had their homes there. The Omanthai security post was set up there in 1992 and the checkpoint has been functioning since 22 March 2002.

The checkpoint was closed down on 29 August 2015.
