Theft at Sajin De Vaas’s residence

The Balapitiya Magistrate Rajindra Jayasuriya ordered that an individual who stole two boat engines valued at Rs 590,000 from the residence of former Member of Parliament Sajin De Vaas Gunawardena, be remanded until 11 of this month.

The suspect was identified as 48-year-old Yakupiti Sunil Shantha a resident of Mahaladuwa, Heenatiya, Balapitiya.

The Magistrate also released on surety bail of Rs. 50,000 Agampodi Ravin Priyan Mendis (35) of Wijayarama Road, Balaptiya who was charged for allegedly purchasing the stolen goods. The suspect was also ordered to be present in court on 11.

The suspect was taken into custody following a complaint lodged at the Kosgoda Police by Pathiranage Tharindu Kumara (32), resident at Kadiragonna, Ahungalla who was the supervisor of Sajin De Vaas's house. The complaint stated that two Yamaha boat engines worth Rs. 295,000 each had been stolen.

The Kosgoda Police which carried out investigations into the incident had taken into custody the suspect who was employed as a watcher at the ex-MPs residence.

According to police the suspect had confessed to the theft following interrogation.Police recovered one boat engine that had been sold for Rs. 10,000 to the second suspect.
Further investigations are being carriedout by a team of Police officers including Officer-In-Charge of the Crimes Division of the Kosgoda Police, Police Sub-Inspector (SI) P. M. Iran, Police Sergeant Ranjan (21930), and Police Constables Yapa (12985) and Amila (77632).
