Gnanesara Thera pleads not guilty

The Court of Appeal yesterday, fixed for argument on May 16, 2017, the contempt of Court application filed against the Venerable Galaboda Aththa Gnanesara Thero.

The magistrate of Homagama had complained to the Court of Appeal under Article 105/3, of the constitution of Sri Lanka, that the Thera, in January 2015 had insulted the dignity of his court by disturbing its proceedings, when the inquiry against army officers, suspected of abducting Ekneligoda, was being heard.

The Court had referred the complaint to the Attorney-General, who had framed the charge shoot.

The Court of Appeal yesterday over-ruled the preliminary objection, by the suspect Thera, who had said that the charge sheet could not stand.

The aforesaid charge sheet was read out to the suspect in open court. The Thera pleaded not guilty.

Manohara de Silva, President’s Counsel appeared for the thera.

Deputy Solicitor General, Rohantha Abeysuriya, appeared for the Attorney General.

The Bench comprised, Justice Vijith K. Mallalgoda (President) and Justice Preethi Padman Soorasena.
