Rangana Herath confirmed as captain

Veteran left-arm spinner Rangana Herath has been named as the Test captain to lead the Sri Lankan team for two Test series against Bangladesh, SLC announced last night.

Herath led the Sri Lankan team to victory in November last year, with a clean sweep of 2-0 against Zimbabwe in his first series as captain. While the spinner has retired from the shorter format of the game, he has taken on the challenge of leading the team through the two Test series against the Bangladeshi team.

Meanwhile, left-arm spinner Malinda Pushpakumara has been included in the Test squad. Pushpakumara took 13 wickets against England ‘A’ as Sri Lanka ‘A’ won the second unofficial Test at Dambulla by three wickets. He was also the highest wicket taker in Premier League cricket this season for Chilaw Marians, who finished behind table leaders SSC.

The Test squad will be announced today.

The first Test gets underway in Galle from 7th March followed by the second Test at P. Sara Oval from the 15th. The second Test will be Bangladesh’s 100th Test.
