A story of a woman constable volunteering to save an abandoned four-month-old baby girl from starving to death by breastfeeding the latter while waiting for paramedics is reported from Wellawaya.
WPC 1307 W.M. Ramya breasted the baby girl who had been brought to the police station with three of her sisters after they had been abandoned by their mother who swallowed poison.
The four children were abandoned by their mother who left a suicide note requesting others to either bring them up or hand them over to an orphanage. The 28-year-old mother from Ethiliwewa, Maha Aragama was found unconscious by neighbours who rushed her to the Moneragala General Hospital. Her four children aged twelve, eight, two and four months. The eldest daughter on returning from school on Friday found that her mother was missing.
On seeing the letter written by her mother, the girl raised alarm and her grandmother with the help of thier neighbours found the mother who was in a critical condition. They took her to hospital.
The grandmother came to the police station with the children to give a statement on the incident. The baby used to breast milk did not consume anything else and kept crying until WPC Ramya volunteered to breastfeed her.
Later the mother of the children’s father promised that she would care for the four children till the recovery of their mother. The father of the children had left the family about a year back and the mother had raised the children by attending to daily wage work, police said.
