The UNP marks its 70th anniversary today. The party’s anniversary rally is scheduled to be held at Campbell Park in Colombo on Sept. 10 from 9.00 am with President Maithripala Sirisena as the Chief Guest.

The UNP was founded on 6 September 1946 by the late D. S. Senanayake after resigning from the Ceylon National Congress. The UNP has been in power from 1947 to 1956, from 1965 to 1970, from 1977 to 1994 and from 2001 to 2004 and from 2015 to date.
