Hydro power level lowest in ten years

Power and Energy Deputy Minister Ajith P. Perera said yesterday that due to the reservoirs not benefitting from recent rains, hydro power production stood at just 34 percent of the country's requirements.

Addressing the weekly Cabinet Press Briefing at the Parliamentary Complex, he revealed that current hydro power levels were the lowest in ten years. " It was the Western Province that mainly benefitted from the rains.We request the public to conserve energy until the situation improves."

Asked what the government was doing with regard to alternate sources of energy such as solar and wind power,the Deputy Minister said that a total of 60 megawatts would added to the national grid by next week.
