The area around the Karadiyana dump site was yesterday placed under Police protection following a Court order to permit the transport of Colombo's garbage to Karadiyana.
The Kesbewa Magistrate's Court granted permission to transport Colombo's garbage to the Karadiyana garbage dump in Piliyandala, following a request made by the Colombo Municipal Council (CMC).
The request came after the collapse of a section of the Meethotamulla garbage dump on 14 April.
The Court order permits the transport of a maximum of 350 metric tonnes of garbage per day from collection sites in Colombo to the Karadiyana dump site. Chairman of the Waste Management Authority Ruwini Dharmasiri informed Court that the authorities will take necessary action to handle the garbage transport efficiently.
The area to be used for garbage dumping in Karadiyana extends to over 37 acres and will be the largest dump site in the South Asia region.
