Rambukkana Protest: Youth arrested for attempted arson released on bail


The youth who was arrested by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) for attempting to set ablaze a fuel bowser during the Rambukkan protest on Tuesday (19) was released on bail this afternoon (23).

The suspect, identified as a 27-year-old resident of Rambukkana, was arrested by tehe CID last night, and was produced before the Kegalle Magistrate’s Court today, wand was released on two surety bails of Rs.100,000 each.

He had attempted to set fire to a fuel bowser carrying nearly 30,000 litres of fuel during the protest, after which Police opened fire at a group of protesters.

24 persons, including 10 Police personnel, sustained injuries while one person was killed.

When the case pertaining to the shooting was taken up at Kegalle Magistrate’s Court yesterday (22), the SSP in charge of Kegalle revealed that he had initially ordered the Police to fire into the air, and had subsequently ordered them to fire below the knees of protesters to prevent any critical injuries.
