Musician finds solace in late marriage

Included in the repertoire of Victor Rathnayake’s cherished songs is “Daivayogayakin Novedo Hamuwune Api Hamuwune, Daivaye saradam labannata Kima Mese Apa Hamuwune”, a song which narrates one’s own fate. Victor Rathnayake sang this accompanied by several acoustic guitars at almost all of his “SA” concerts. With such a soul-stirring melody the song became an overnight success, hummed by lovers of his music and songs, even today. His songs created much sensation among the youth and he became one of the country’s most sought after artistes. His presence at public performances and as a background singer in many films earned him much accolades and tributes. After the demise of his wife 13 years ago, and the children being all settled down, loneliness crept in.
Neither music nor songs could bring him solace. Though captivated audiences, who found happiness and contentment in his songs, Victor himself felt that without a companion by his side, music alone will not bring him solace and happiness. Thus, Victor, at the age of 75 chose to marry Hashini (33) a bank employee. It was his “Daivayogaya”or his fate that late in life he had found someone to care for him. However, the marriage has paved way for controversy with Victor’s children taking a swipe at their father alleging that the marriage was a ploy by the lady to acquire the wealth of the maestro.

No one to care for me
We encountered Victor Rathnayake on the issue

Is it true that you married again?

Yes, I married again. The story is true. Those who are now creating issues over this affair had never come forward to help me. Those who pose the question as to why I remarried never had helped me even by making a cup of tea or providing me with any meals. I wanted someone in my life. There cannot be any issue over that.

Is it true that this is the result of a long standing affair?

Not very long; It has been about six years now

What about the allegations your children are making about your new wife?

I cannot be moved by these allegations. That is all I have to say.

This decision of yours, has it in anyway affected your children?

There is no such thing. As their father I have fulfilled my duties toward them. My marriage was held in a justifiable manner and for valid reasons. I do not see anything wrong in that.

What is your response to allegations that your private affairs and the activities connected with music have become endangered due to these developments?

No, it is not true. There are no impediments to my musical career, and my fans would not suffer with this decision of mine.

Pure love
We also interviewed Mrs Hashini Ratnayake

You are now 33 years old and how did you get so close to Victor, who is now 75. Is it a love affair or is there any other motive behind it?

I actually met Victor (Refers to him as sir) only as a fan. I really liked his songs. We knew each other for the past six years, and there was a very good understanding between the two of us, and this brought us closer.

What I asked you was whether there was a true love on your part or whether there was any other motive? What is the actual reason for you to have become so attached to Victor?

This was something I never dreamed of, and never expected. However we became so close and our relationship turned into a love affair. I had high regard for Victor sir. Our thoughts, our love and our hopes were very similar. A very good understanding led to this situation. The high regard and respect I have for Victor sir still remains with me.

It was very shocking to observe what his children had said. But the attitude of Victor towards the allegations that his own sons were making was amazing, as he took no offence. He only said that they were their views and we have not done anything wrong

Have you studied music?

I have not studied Oriental music, but Western music. From my childhood I have been enjoying Victor sir’s songs.

Is it true that you were involved in a bank fraud and it was a ruse that you joined Victor in order to escape from these charges?

No there is no such thing. I am still employed at the Peoples’ Bank, and I am on leave these days.

If we directly pose you the question that your marriage to Victor was to inherit his wealth, what is your response?

I never fell in love with Victor’s money or his assets. Whatever people may say Victor sir has a clear understanding of me. I am now married to him.

After hearing about your affair with Victor and the news of the marriage, what was the response of your family?

First there were objections from my family, but they too understood later on. Whatever it was, we had taken a firm decision that whatever comes our way, we will not stop.

Are you going to continue working at the Bank?

Victor sir wants me to leave the job, and I will resign soon so that I will be able to take care of him better and assist him in his activities.

At a time when Victor’s children are slandering you and this marriage over social media, what did Victor tell you?

At the beginning we were shocked. We were never worried over these matters that are posted on social media. We only came to know after our friends informed us about the malicious posts. It was very shocking to observe what his children had said.

But the attitude of Victor towards the allegations that his own sons were making was amazing, as he took no offence. He only said that they were their views and we have not done anything wrong.
He said “Let us be patient and see”. We have not spoken against them, or criticised them and we will not act in that manner.

There is a considerable gap between your age and Victor’s. Have you taken that into account?

Yes, we knew that and it is not an issue, I am aware that Victor sir is very much older than me.

Once married the next thing a bride expects is children. Do you have any such hopes?

Sometimes it can happen and I might become a mother in due course.

It was very shocking to observe what his children had said. But the attitude of Victor towards the allegations that his own sons were making was amazing, as he took no offence. He only said that they were their views and we have not done anything wrong

Victor’s son Lelum Rathnayake

This plan had been launched about three years ago with the motive of separating us from our father, in order to show the world that the children were not looking after their father

We also approached Victor’s son Jayantha to obtain his views on this matter, and failing in our attempts we contacted his younger son Lelum Rathnayake, who published a video on social media that his father had died. He had this to say about his father’s marriage to Hashini.

At this moment I am not ready to say anything, you can watch the Video and get all the details, you need not refer further, everything is included there. We quote below what appeared in the said video.
“The main actress of this episode is Hashini. She is around thirty years of age. She is a resident of Tangalle. She is a suspect in a fraud case at the People’s Bank, Tangalle . It is my father who had saved her from the charges. During her assignment at the Bank she had seen the Fixed Deposits of my father and hinted to someone close to her that she would someday own it. We lived with our father from infancy. We did not bring disrepute to our father.

I was regarded as the mischievous one in the family. My father always said that I was like him; a good person.

This plan had been launched about three years ago with the motive of separating us from our father, in order to show the world that the children were not looking after their father

“This plan had been launched about three years ago with the motive of separating us from our father, in order to show the world that the children were not looking after their father. We were all cared for by our mother. She died 13 years ago. My father did not attend the ‘Bana’ held on the 13th death anniversary at my brother’s house. Knowing very well the issues we asked our father to come for the Bana and not to bring this woman along. My father was not allowed to come. “You all love Victor Rathnayake.

The way I love my father I could not bear it. So I published a post stating that my father had died. I did not mean that Victor Rathnayake died. I do not want Victor Rathnayake to die, because I love him the most.”

MG Danushka ordered to pay Rs 300,000

Singer MG Dhanushka was ordered to pay Rs.300,000 to the sons of well-known singer, the late MS Fernando on agreeing to settle the matter amicably.

The order was given by Colombo Chief Magistrate Lal Ranasinghe Bandara in the case in which it was alleged that Dhanushka had violated the Intellectual Property Act by singing the late Mr. Fernando’s songs.

He was asked to make the payment by March 31.

Mr. Fernando’s son Sarath had complained to the CID that the suspect had breached his late father’s rights by singing his late father’s songs without permission to do so.

Organisers failed to pay vocalist

Veteran vocalist Amarasiri Pieris lodged a complaint at the Anuradhapura Police on February 11 alleging that the organisers of his Unmada Sadanam solo musical show scheduled at Swarnapali Balika National School that day had failed to pay him the Rs. 750,000 charges as agreed upon.

Anuradhapura Police immediately responding to the complaint visited the organisers including a woman who had booked in at a hotel in Anuradhapura and took steps to solve the issue with the organisers agreeing to pay him the money as promised.

Since fans who had purchased the tickets had arrived at the venue already despite the absence of the organisers, Pieris visited the hall and made the fans satisfied by singing six of his songs.

Asangi Chandima Wijesuriya who was one of the organisers of the event when contacted over the phone said she did not like to utter a word against Pieris that would disgrace him.

She alleged that a group of people led by a powerful businessman in Anuradhapura had plotted to disrupt the show and sabotage the event.

She had made a written complaint regarding it to the OIC of Anuradhapura Police.

Wijesuriya said since Pieris informed her that he will not participate in the show and would be leaving Anuradhapura at 5 pm that day, she informed all invitees and fans that the show had been cancelled and advised her agents to halt the sale of tickets. She said however Pieris had visited the hall around 7 pm and rendered several songs. She said she invited Pieris for the show and she would pay him the money as agreed. Wijesuriya said 44 tickets had been sold in Anuradhapura town but she would refund the money to those who had bought the tickets.

Chat With Dulani Anuradha

She was the face of ‘Kuveni,’ ‘Ehelepola Kumarihami’ and ‘Patachara’. Historical movies have always been Dulani Anuradha’s forte. Though she had acted in fictional films like ‘Sangili’ and ‘Paravarthana’, she is mostly remembered for great women in history that she has given life to. Her debut performance in Jackson Anthony’s ‘Aba’ brought her fame and fortune. It highlighted her dancing skills as well as her acting prowess. It won her the Sarasaviya Best Actress Award in 2008.

Dulani will don a new avatar as a police officer in an upcoming film. She has also taken on a negative role in the upcoming teledrama ‘Oba Ayemath Avidin’ which is based on a true story.

Q: Do you limit your acting talents mostly to historical characters now?

A: I do get invitations for other types of films. In fact Lalith Pannipitiya’s ‘Sangili’, my second movie carries a fictional tale set in the rural areas in Sri Lanka. Then ‘Kuveni’ and ‘Ehelepola Kumarihami’ happened. I did ‘Parawarthana’ which was based on the theme of retribution. Then ‘Patachara’ followed. So it is true that I mostly get offers to play historical roles. (Laughs) Maybe they are happy with my output and appearance for such roles.

Udayakantha Warnasuriya’s ‘Bandana’ is coming up. That is based on a realistic tale.

Q: What is the most challenging scene you have done?

A: There are quite a few. All my roles have been appealing as well as appalling! (Laughs) The films that I have taken on mostly have such demanding scenes. There was one scene in ‘Patachara’ in which I had to get into the deep waters with a baby in my arms. Another child was by the river bank in that scene and both of their lives were practically in my hands! It was a thought that weighted heavily on me till that episode was shot.

There was another scene in ‘Ehelepola Kumarihami’ in which I had to dive into the waters from a slope what was 12 feet high. That was scary! I really felt like I was diving to my death when I did that scene. Due to the pressure of falling into the water from such a great height my body turned blue in a few seconds after that scene was shot.

Q: Has your acting ever become a hindrance to your career as a dancing teacher?

A: No. I am selective about my roles. Therefore, so far I have not encountered any problems.

Q: Why are you passionate about teaching dance?

A: Ever since I was small I have loved dancing. Song and dance has been omnipresent in my life. I even got an offer to teach dancing as soon as I was out of school. I was 19 years old then. However I took up the subject later and learnt it thoroughly at the University of Kelaniya. I wanted to learn the subject well and become a qualified teacher.

Q: Who are your idols?

A: I admire our Screen Queen Malani Fonseka. She has reached such great heights that she has fans in every corner of the world. She has acted in movies of all genres and given life to many diverse roles. She can truly be called an all rounder. Not all of us can do such things. Whenever I get a role I remember her and then question myself on why I should do that role and how it can contribute to the industry.

I have a high regard for our ‘Golden Star of Sinhala cinema’ Swarna Mallawarachchi too. Her acting is flawless. They are my two heroines in the industry.

Q: What is your first childhood memory?

A: I loved watching the ‘Robin Hood’ series and I was particularly fond of Marian. I used to act out the scenes in them by myself. (Laughs) Once my brother even complained to my mother saying “Amma, nangi talks to herself!” when he caught me during one of my ‘acting frenzies’.

Q: If you could give life to a historic character from the international scene, who would you choose?

A: Cleopatra - Queen of Egypt. She is someone who has captured my interest a lot because of her beauty and her fate. She is such a strong woman. If I would ever get an opportunity to act in a historical foreign movie - let it be Cleopatra please...

Q: What kind of outfits suits you best?

A: I have got great feedback when I am dressed in gowns. The length does not really count because my fans have told me that I carry both the long and short dresses really well. I had a craze for black and white clothes when I was schooling. My cupboard was practically full of black and white outfits then. But I outgrew that phase and now bright colours have made it to my wardrobe. My favourite colours are yellows and pinks.

Q: Wouldn’t you like to produce or direct a movie or teledrama?

A: You need a lot of money to make a quality production. I do not have that privilege right now and I was never the one to do anything just for the sake of doing it.

Directing? Oh, no. (Shaking her head rigorously) I would never be any good at it. I don’t think I would ever turn to directing in my life.

Q: If you could eat only one food for the rest of your life, what would you choose?

A: (Burst into giggles) That is the most difficult question of the lot! (Laughs) I love my food. So asking me to choose one would be such a difficult task. Even when we go abroad and indulge in something like Chinese food I find myself hankering for some warm rice and pol sambol. My favourite meal is warm rice with pol sambol and sausages.

Q: If you are given an opportunity to present a dance item on an international stage, who would you choose as your dance partner and what kind of dance would you present?

A: My all time favourite was Michael Jackson but since he is no more I would choose Hrithik Roshan. What kind of dance would I present? (Mischievously) That doesn’t really matter with him around, right? I actually don’t know if I would dance if he was on stage with me. I might end up just watching him! (LOL) I would probably go with the flow and do the best I can for the show.

Q: When do you hope to tie the knot and what kind of qualities do you expect in your future partner?

A: I believe that there is a time for everything. If I meet the right person and decide that the time is right, then I would not delay my marriage. I look for a good personality, understanding and someone who can love me a lot. He should be able to be in a position to take care of me financially as well.

Q: What is the best dancing tip you can give to a young dancer?

A: Learn your subject well. You need to give dancing your full focus. If you get everything right success would follow you wherever you go.

Q: What is your opinion about stars singing and dancing in reality shows? Would you ever take part in one either as a contestant or a judge?

A: I have been part of the jury for such reality competitions which have featured children or contestants from the public. Every channel called me when they wanted to launch a reality show featuring stars. I am very grateful for that. However don’t like competitions. It is an unnecessary pressure for me when I want to lead a free lifestyle. However I have seen our colleagues perform wonderfully in such programs with such spirits and good team work. I enjoy and admire their output but being a part of such a competition is simply not for me.

Q: What is the question you get asked most frequently these days.

A: (Smiling sheepishly) “When are you getting married?”
