Mendis 150 puts Sri Lanka on top

Kusal Mendis had one first-class century before Thursday, the third day of Sri Lanka's first Test against Australia. He walked to the crease at 6 for 2, after a wicket had fallen from the third ball of the morning. Sri Lanka were 80 short of making Australia bat again. Mendis had survived only seven deliveries in the first innings.

The ingredients were all wrong, but like the world's greatest chef, he somehow fashioned them into a masterpiece. Australia could only watch on as Sri Lanka's fans were served up a rare treat.

The most remarkable thing was that by tea, Sri Lanka were on top in the match. Their first-innings debacle of 117 had made their job difficult, but Australia's task in the fourth innings would be no easier. Mendis, with help from Dinesh Chandimal, had given Sri Lanka's bowlers something to defend. At the break. they were 167 runs in front. Five wickets were still in hand, and things were getting out of hand for Australia.

Mendis was on 157, alongside Dhananjaya de Silva, who had reached 24, and the Sri Lanka total was 253 for 5. During the first session, they lost three wickets for 110 runs, but in the second session, Australia's efforts bore just a single piece of fruit - the dismissal of Chandimal for 42. But Mendis was very much the key wicket required by Australia in a Test in which no other batsman had so much as scored a fifty.

He was sublime all around the wicket. He played straight, but always looked to score, pulling and flicking classily through leg, sweeping effectively, cutting when the fast bowlers gave him width. Mendis struck 19 fours and brought up his century in his 143rd delivery with his only six, slog-swept over deep midwicket off the bowling of Steve O'Keefe. He soon moved on to his highest first-class score.

Mendis had made precious few mistakes throughout his innings, although on 142, he drove a tough caught-and-bowled opportunity through the hands of Josh Hazlewood. Australia were also left to regret not asking for a review when Mendis was on 66, after he had missed an attempted sweep off Nathan Lyon, who was coming from around the wicket. The Australians seemed barely interested in sending that one upstairs.

Instead, they frittered away both of their reviews on deliveries from O'Keefe that were, respectively, pitching outside leg and only just clipping leg stump. The Australians were not alone. Not since United Passions hit the cinemas have worse reviews flowed from every direction. Dimuth Karunaratne and Kaushal Silva both needlessly contested their lbws early in the morning.

Starc's pace beat Karunaratne in the first over of the day and O'Keefe sneaked his arm ball through the defences of Silva. Neither man reached double figures, and nor did captain Angelo Mathews, who was caught at bat-pad for 9, off the bowling of Lyon. Australia had picked up three wickets before lunch, but Mendis was already past fifty and proving to be a headache.

Things got trickier for Australia in the second session as Mendis and Chandimal compiled their 117-run fifth-wicket partnership, easily the highest of the match. O'Keefe left the field with an injury to his right hamstring, and any half-chances presented to Australia seemed to go begging. On 24, Chandimal popped up a very catchable return chance that was spilled by Starc.

Finally, the breakthrough came, as Chandimal was trapped lbw by Mitchell Marsh, who managed to nip the ball back in late. Still, it was the only wicket of the session as Mendis found a new ally. The debutant de Silva, who got off the mark with a six in the first innings, boldly thumped a boundary over mid-on to get off the mark this time, and by tea, the new partnership had grown to 50.

But this was all about Mendis. The rest were simply his support staff. Just before tea, he brought up his 150 with a cut to the boundary off Lyon, off his 211th delivery. He walked off to a standing ovation from the small crowd. It is hard to believe if anybody present - even Mendis himself - could have expected such a scenario when play began this morning.

Lakshan Sandakan's 4 -for best by a chinaman on Test debut

PALLEKELE: Sri Lanka’s new bowling ‘find’ Lakshan Sandakan said that it was hard to explain how he felt when he was told that he was playing in his first Test against Australia at the Pallekele Stadium.

“Australia are the world number one team and everyone wants to do well in Test cricket against them. I got an opportunity and I wanted to do well. Hard to explain how I feel,” said Sandakan after taking four wickets for 58 to dismiss Australia for 203 on the second day.

“Rangana (Herath) was a huge support. He told me how he did it when he played his first Test and what to expect. I thought I had a good day.”

Sandakan did not have to wait too long for his maiden Test wicket which was Mitchell Marsh whom he dismissed with a peach of a delivery in his sixth over. The batsman failed to pick up his wrong ’un and was bowled off stump.

“Mitchell Marsh is a guy who can play the anchor role. It’s a big wicket. Dismissing him was special,” said Sandakan. “I bowled a googly to the other batsman (Adam) Voges. He got beaten and I thought that I can take a wicket by mixing it up and I was able to fox Marsh and get his wicket.”

“I wanted to be the first chinaman bowler to play for Sri Lanka. That dream became a reality yesterday. Rangana was giving me a lot of tips. He wanted me not to get over excited and told me to stick to the basics. There was lot of support from the seniors and the captain too,” said the 25-year-old spinner who has played three years of first-class cricket for CCC and was the leading wicket-taker in the domestic cricket for the past two years.

He took 54 wickets in his first season, 45 in his second and after working a lot on his fitness with Chandrishan Perera at CCC and national spin coach Piyal Wijetunge and other coaches he won the Best Bowler’s Award last year with 52 wickets.

Educated at Karunaratne Vidyalaya, Mattumagala and coming under coaches Buddhi Prasanna and Madawa Mihran he was spotted by provincial coach Keerthi Gunaratne who took him Sanjeewa Mendis who helped him to get to De Mazenod and play first eleven cricket.

Sandakan is of the opinion that Sri Lanka will need to get something like 250 to 300 runs to be in with a chance of winning the Test. “The wicket I am sure will get drier and we have a good chance to win if we get more than 300.” – ST

Man sets ward on fire in horrific attack, 3 dead

The horrific moment a man set a hospital ward ablaze in an attack on another patient, killing three including himself, has been caught on CCTV.

The shocking incident involved an apparently furious dialysis patient at a private hospital in Albania. The video shows him walking calmly into the ward, where four people are receiving treatment, before dousing a male patient with gasoline.

A scuffle ensues before the perpetrator ignites the fluid, causing an explosion and engulfing the room in flames.

Three people died in the inferno that was intentionally started at the American Hospital in Tirana, Monday.

Two female patients, Sanije Sulaj, and Hani Mal, both aged 55, died from asphyxiation, according to Albanian news site Albeu.

The target of the attack, Dashamir Saraci, was seriously injured while the arsonist, identified as Lefter Canaj, died Tuesday, according to Albanian Daily News. He had been arrested by police a few hours earlier.

It’s believed Canaj carried out the attack after he had an argument earlier that day with Saraci while waiting to use the kidney dialysis machine.

The hospital issued a statement on Facebook commending the actions of the nurses, who helped extinguish the fire before police and firefighters attended the scene.

Lasantha Murder Probe : Driver identifies army officer

During an identification parade, the driver of assassinated journalist Lasantha Wickramatunge has identified the Warrant Officer (WO) who was arrested in connection with the murder.

The identification parade was held in the presence of Mt. Lavinia Magistrate W. Lochana this afternoon (27).

The WO will be produced for another identification parade before an eye witness in the murder, it was reported.

Police said that the army officer was arrested over the abduction, unlawful detention and questioning of the individual, who was the driver of Wickramatunge’s vehicle prior to the assassination.

The CID was granted permission to detain and interrogate the suspect for 48 hours after he was produced before court earlier on Saturday. Wickrematunge, founding editor of privately-run newspaper Sunday Leader, was shot dead while he drove to work in January 2009. Wickrematunga was a staunch critic of the administration of then-president Mahinda Rajapaksa, which has insisted it had no role in the editor’s killing.

Sri Lanka’s new government had reopened investigations into the murder after coming to power in January last year.  In February, the police released sketches of two persons who are suspected to be involved in the assassination. The Army Commander had recently appointed two Court of Inquiries to investigate the misplaced documents in the cases pertaining to the murder of Wickramatunge and the disappearance of journalist Prageeth Eknaligoda.
