The exchange rate (ER) recorded its lowest ever value at yesterday's trading, falling by 11 cents to register a figure of Rs 152.44 to the US dollar, data showed. Its previous lowest was Rs 152.37 recorded on 23 December 2016.
These lows are due to foreign exits from the financial markets led by the government securities market (Treasury (T) Bill and T Bond market). These figures are as per the average selling price of the dollar as quoted by commercial banks in Colombo for telegraphic transfer as at 9:30 a.m. yesterday.
