A septuagenarian woman who was travelling on the pillion of a motorbike on Baseline Road was seriously injured, resulting in her death when a branch of a tree being lopped, crashed down on her, in front of the official residence of the Commissioner General of Prisons.
The Colombo Additional Magistrate Nishantha Peiris yesterday (29) ordered the Borella Police to conduct an extensive investigation in this connection. The deceased is Lalitha Chandra De Silva residing at Veluwana road, Dematagoda.

She had met with this fate when she was travelling with her husband yesterday on the motor bike near the official residence of the Prisons Commissioner General.
When the branches of the tree were being lopped by the prisoners, one of these branches had fallen on the victim causing serious injuries, and she was admitted to the Colombo National Hospital, where she succumbed to her injuries.
Borella Police officer Bandara informed Court that statements were recorded of the prison officers and prisoners who were connected with this incident.
Further investigations are being conducted by the Borella Police under the instructions of Police inspector Paragathi Lakshman Abeywardena.
