Convenor of the Joint Opposition, parliamentarian Prasanna Ranatunge yesterday said that if President Maithripala Sirisena decided to contest the 2020 Presidential election the Joint Opposition would field a separate candidate.
Ranatunge said so when he visited fellow parliamentarian Wimal Weerawansa at the Welikade Remand Prison last Saturday.
He said the split in the SLFP had benefited the UNP and Maithripala Sirisena should take the responsibility for the situation.
Ranatunga said Sirisena had failed to fulfil his election pledges.
"Now they are testing the ground and eventually contestants at next Presidential election will be Maithripala Sirisena and Ranil Wickremesinghe and with his unpopularity Sirisena will lose," he said.
