President will resign if all party leaders make request

Speaker of the Parliament of Sri Lanka Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena has informed Party Leaders that President Gotabaya Rajapaksa is prepared to resign if all party leaders together request him to do so, Opposition leader MP Sajith Premadasa said today.

Addressing the Parliament, MP Premadasa informed the Speaker that the party leaders were willing to do so.
He further called on the Speaker to provide an opportunity to convey their request to the President.

The opposition leader also commented on the shooting incident that had taken place in Rambukkana yesterday, in which one protester had died and many others were injured.

MP Sajith Premadasa said the opposition rejects the Police- level investigations to be conducted into the incident.

Questioning as to who gave the order to open fire and which SSP was vested with powers to issue such an order, the opposition leader called on the Speaker to summon the Defence Secretary, Inspector General of Police (IGP), and the SSP who gave the shooting order to report to the Parliament.

MP Premadasa said it was essential for these individuals to be questioned by the Party Leaders on the incident that took place in Rambukkana.

He further said the incident must be investigated by an investigation board that consists of Supreme Court judges, and not any institution under the incumbent Government.
