12 killed as lorry ploughs into Berlin Xmas market

A lorry ploughed into a busy Christmas market in Berlin on Monday, killing at least 12 people and injuring dozens more in what police said was a suspected terror attack.

Ambulances and heavily armed police rushed to the area after the vehicle mounted the pavement of the market in a square popular with tourists, in horrific scenes reminiscent of July’s deadly truck attack in the French Riviera city of Nice.

"I don’t want to use the word ‘attack’ yet, although there are many things pointing to one," Interior Minister Thomas de Maiziere told public television.

As witnesses described scenes of panic and carnage, police said at least 12 people were killed and 48 others were injured in the incident, which came less than a week before Christmas.

Australian Trisha O’Neill told the Australian Broadcasting Corporation she was only metres from where the truck smashed into the crowded market.

"I just saw this huge black truck speeding through the markets crushing so many people and then all the lights went out and everything was destroyed.

"I could hear screaming and then we all froze. Then suddenly people started to move and lift all the wreckage off people, trying to help whoever was there."

O’Neill said there was "blood and bodies everywhere".

- ‘We mourn the dead’ -

A German police spokeswoman told AFP that a man who was apparently driving the truck had been detained while the passenger was dead.

Police later identified the passenger as a Polish national.

Security sources cited by DPA news agency said that the man behind the wheel was an asylum seeker from Afghanistan or Pakistan who arrived in Germany in February.

The daily Tagesspiegel said the man was known to police but for minor crimes, not links to terrorism.

The Polish owner of the lorry confirmed his driver was missing.

"We haven’t heard from him since this afternoon. We don’t know what happened to him. He’s my cousin, I’ve known him since I was a kid. I can vouch for him," transport company owner Ariel Zurawski told AFP.

Lukasz Wasik of the same company said contact was lost with the 37-year old at around 3 pm (1400 GMT).

German authorities said there was no indication of "further dangerous situations in the city near Breitscheidplatz", where the suspected attack took place.

"We are investigating whether it was a terror attack but do not yet know what was behind it," a police spokesman said.

Chancellor Angela Merkel reacted quickly to the incident, with spokesman Steffen Seibert tweeting: "We mourn the dead and hope that the many people injured can be helped."

- ‘Safer than Paris’ -

Traditional Christmas markets are popular in cities and towns throughout Germany and have frequently been mentioned by security services as potentially vulnerable to attacks.

"It’s awful. We were in Berlin for Christmas," said American tourist Kathy Forbes. "We also thought it would be safer than Paris."

The crash happened in the shadow of the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church whose damage in a World War II bombing raid has been preserved as a reminder of the horrors of war for future generations.

The square is at the end of the Kurfuerstendamm boulevard, which was packed with holiday shoppers.

Police said the truck made it as far as 80 metres (yards) into the Christmas market before it came to a halt.

- High alert -

Europe has been on high alert for most of 2016, with terror attacks striking Paris and Brussels, while Germany has been hit by several assaults claimed by the Islamic State group and carried out by asylum-seekers.

An axe rampage on a train in the southern state of Bavaria in July wounded five people, and a suicide bombing left 15 people injured in the same state six days later.

In another case, a 16-year-old German-Moroccan girl in February stabbed a police officer in the neck with a kitchen knife, wounding him badly, allegedly on IS orders.

The arrival of 890,000 refugees last year has polarised Germany, with critics calling the influx a serious security threat.

The attack in Berlin comes five months after Tunisian extremist Mohamed Lahouaiej Bouhlel ploughed a truck into a crowd on the Nice seafront, killing 86 people.

In response to the suspected attack in Berlin, France beefed up security at its own Christmas markets.

"The French share in the mourning of the Germans in the face of this tragedy that has hit all of Europe," President Francois Hollande said.

The Nice bloodshed — as people were watching a fireworks display on the Bastille Day holiday on July 14 — further traumatised a France already reeling from a series of jihadist attacks.

The United States labelled Monday’s incident an apparent "terrorist attack" and pledged its support.

President-elect Donald Trump blamed "Islamist terrorists" for a "slaughter" of Christians in the German capital.

Turkish cop shoots Russian ambassador dead in Ankara

The ambassador, Andrei Karlov, was several minutes into his speech at the embassy-sponsored exhibition in the capital, Ankara, when the gunman fired at least eight shots, according to an AP photographer in the audience.

The attacker also smashed several of the photos hung for the exhibition. There was panic as people ran for cover. NTV said three other people were wounded in the attack.

Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said Karlov was shot "when an unidentified assailant opened chaotic gunfire during a public event in Ankara". She later confirmed he had died. She said Russia was in contact with Turkish officials about the incident.

The gunman has been identified as a Turkish policeman, Ankara Mayor Melih Gokcek  said.

"The attacker is a policeman," Mr. Gokcek said on his official Twitter account, after numerous reports on social media identifying the gunman.

SLFP opposes proposed super ministry

Minister of Petroleum Resources Chandima Weerakkody yesterday said the SLFP would oppose the government’s efforts to create a super ministry.

Addressing the media in Colombo yesterday, Weerakkody said the SLFP had realised the danger of creating super ministers. President Mahinda Rajapaksa had lost his presidency due to the creation of super ministers, he added
.
However, the SLFP was agreeable to making legal provisions for accelerating the development process while opposing the creation of the super ministry, Minister Weerakkody said.

The SLFP dissidents in the Joint Opposition have also vowed to defeat the moves being made to vest what they call draconian powers in a single minister.

Two Billion-Year-Old Water Found in Canadian Mine

Researchers have uncovered water that dates back a whopping two billion years. It’s the oldest water ever discovered on Earth, and it could broaden our understanding of how life emerged on our planet—and possibly elsewhere.

The University of Toronto scientists found the primordial water at a depth of 1.5 miles miles (2.4 km) in Kidd Creek Mine, which is located in Timmins, Ontario.
The team, co-led by geoscientist Oliver Warr, explained their findings at an American Geophysical Union meeting held earlier this week in San Francisco. These findings are set to appear in a future edition of the journal Nature.

In order to date water, researchers have to look at the accumulation of gases in the sample. This particular bucketful of ancient water contained helium, argon, neon, krypton and xenon. Calculating how much of these elements accumulated over the immense gulfs of time that this water has existed helped researchers identify its age.

The water has been described as being 8 times saltier than sea water. “It won’t kill you if you drank it, but it would taste absolutely disgusting.”

Much can be learned from such a discovery. According to postdoctoral researcher Oliver Warr, “If water has been down there for up to two billion years, it can tell us something about the atmosphere at the time, or the state of the Earth, which previously we’ve not been able to get much insight into.” And not only can we learn about the conditions in which the water may have existed billions of years ago, but there’s also a chance it may actually contain ancient life

“That could have great ramifications as to how life might exist at these kinds of depths, how it might survive,” Warr said. “It could start paving the way for understanding life on other planets as well.” Earlier this year, scientists discovered 3.7 billion year old fossils in Greenland, which would make it entirely possible for this 2 billion-year-old water to contain traces of life, if not entire organisms.

The extreme conditions for billions of years ago could give some important insight into how life began on our planet, or even how it might exist on the harsh conditions of planets like Mars.

Kareena Kapoor Khan Gives Birth To A Baby Boy

Kareena Kapoor Khan, the ravishing beauty and Bollywood diva, has given birth to a healthy baby boy in Breach Candy Hospital Mumbai 7:30 am in the morning, said IndianExpress.

Reportedly, both the baby as well as the mother are doing well and the baby has been named as Taimur Ali Khan Pataudi. She dropped her decision of moving to London for giving the birth. At the time of delivery, Kareena was accompanied by hubby Saif Ali Khan, sister Karisma Kapoor, mother Babita and father Randhir Kapoor.
This is Kareena's first child, while Saif already is a proud father of Sara (23) and Ibrahim (15) from his previous marriage to Amrita Singh.

Kareena's delivery was one of the most anticipated ones in Bollywood. Interestingly, the sumptuous actress remained active even during her pregnancy and fulfilled her work commitments. She is perhaps the first actress from the B-town who carried off her pregnancy with flair and elan. While most others shy away from the paparazzi during their pregnancy, Kareena flaunted her baby bump in TV commercials and even on the ramp walks; an act which earned her recognition not just from the Indian media, but even from across the world.

Now that the blue-blooded baby has arrived in this world, all eyes will be set on the announcement of his name. Saif had earlier stated that he won't mind naming the child Saifeena; a name given to the power couple by the media. While there is still some time before the name becomes official, we meanwhile wish Kareena and Saif on becoming parents and extend a lot of warmth and love to the little one.

Rajitha thinks he is fit to rule country

Health, Nutrition and Indigenous Medicine Minister Dr. Rajitha Senaratne says that he could lead the country someday as he does not bow down to the might of tobacco companies.

The Health Minister said at a ceremony held in Gampaha to declare open an Osu Sala of the State Pharmaceutical Company there recently:

"We came under severe pressure when we decided to increase tobacco prices by 90 percent. Pressure also came from within the yahapalana government itself. But, I did not back off. Then a scholar pointed out to me that I was qualified to accept the responsibility of leading the country since I was fighting for the benefit of the common man."

The Health Ministry said, in a media statement, quoting the minister that tobacco companies were now complaining of losses and could not run their businesses after the recent tax and price increases of tobacco products. "They can shut down their businesses. No one will oppose it."

Former President Mahinda Rajapaksa, too, was on the side of tobacco companies, Senaratne said. "When we wanted to make it mandatory to print pictorial warnings on 80 percent of the display area of the cigarette packets, the former President sided with the tobacco industry. With the help of the judiciary the area was reduced 60 percent."

Among those who attended the ceremony were former Deputy Minister P. Bandaranayke, Gampaha District UNP MP Chatura Senaratne, Chairman of the State Pharmaceutical Corporation Attorney at Law Sarath Liyanage and Managing Director Dr H. M. M. Rumy.
