‘Ecstasy’ smuggler nabbed

A suspect was arrested with a haul of the illegal drug 'Ecstasy', worth approximately Rs 7million, an Excise Department source said.

The suspect was arrested on Monday by the Special Operations Bureau under the Department of Excise.The suspect was a software engineer by profession, the source said, adding that 1176 pills of two specific shapes were in the suspect's possession when he was taken into custody.

Man arrested for killing his 12th mistress

A 27-year man was arrested at Hiriwadunna, Habarana for killing his mistress on Sunday. He was taking her body in a mini truck presumably for disposal at the time of his arrest.

The victim, K. D. Kanchana Dilrukshi (28), was a mother of one. She had been cohabiting with the suspect, police said.

Lankan guilty of murder in Canada

A jury in Canada that had been deliberating since last week found Amalan Thandapanithesigar, who came to Canada as Sri Lankan refugee, guilty of second-degree murder for having stabbed his neighbour in Côte-des-Neiges, Montreal in Canada, Montreal Gazette reported.

Thandapanithesigar was originally charged with first-degree murder, but the jury found him guilty of the lesser charge late Monday afternoon. It meant the jury was probably not convinced he planned the murder even though they heard evidence that, a week before the murder was carried out, the victim had made unwelcome advances on Thandapanithesigar’s wife.

Geetha Kumarasinghe Disqualified To Be MP

The Court of Appeal has ruled that Galle district MP Geetha Kumarasinghe was disqualified to be a Member of Parliament due to her dual citizenship status.

She holds citizenship status in Switzerland as well as Sri Lanka.

According to the newly introduced 19th amendment to the Constitution, a Sri Lankan Citizen holding citizenship status in another country cannot hold a seat in the legislature

Ramith Rambukwella gets engaged

Sri Lanka’s allrounder Ramith Rambukwella got engaged to his long time friend Natalie Shenelle, recently. His fellow crickets were also present at the privetly held cermony.

Rambukwella, a dashing left-handed batsman and right-arm off break bowler, made his international debut for Sri Lanka in November 2013 against New Zealand. A hard hitting middle order batsman, he has particularly been popular for smashing big sixes, and he tidy bowling is more than handy.

GMOA announce another strike

The Government Medical Officers’ Association (GMOA) and those backing the ongoing high profile campaign against the South Asian Institute of Technology and Medicine (SAITM) will strike on Friday (May 5). A senior GMOA official told The Island that several workers, including those in the state transport sector would join the one-day strike. The official said that they wanted the government to take over SAITM.
