I am ready to give evidence against Gen. Jayasuriya

Minister and Field Marshal, Sarath Fonseka said today he had information on the crimes committed by former army commander Jagath Jayasuriya, the then Vanni commander and that he was ready to give evidence if proper legal action was instituted against him.

“I received complaints that Mr. Jayasuriya was engaged in crimes as Vanni commander with regard to those who were arrested. He continued the same strategy even after he was promoted as army commander. I have information regarding those who committed the crimes. I am ready to explain the crimes committed in detail if proper legal action is instituted,” he said.

A.H.M. Azwer passes away

ormer Minister and UPFA National List MP A.H.M. Azwer passed away at the age of 80 at a private hospital in Colombo today.

Mr. Azwer was a journalist and a teacher before pursuing a career in politics.

He started as a member of the LSSP in 1950, A UNP member in 1955 and then joined the SLFP in 2008.

Sri Lanka Cricket selection committee resigns

Sri Lanka Cricket Selection Committee headed by Chief Selector Sanath Jayasuriya submitted their resignations today, Sports Minister Dayasiri Jayasekera said.

The resignation is to be effective from September 7, 2017, the day after Sri Lanka is due to play its one off T20 against India.

Do not behave like Indian spectators

World Cup-winning cricket captain and Minister Arjuna Ranatunga today requested Sri Lankan Cricket lovers to stop behaving like Indian spectators at the end of cricket matches.

Addressing the media at the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation Head Office yesterday he said an incident had been reported as spectators had thrown plastic bottles into the ground during the third one day international cricket match between Sri Lanka and India at the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium in Pallekele on Sunday.

Chemistry tuition master remanded

The tuition master, who was wanted in connection with the alleged distribution of leaflets containing questions from the Advanced Level chemistry paper, has been remanded till August 30.

The tuition master, Jinendra Ranasinghe who was wanted in connection with this incident and was absconding arrest, surrendered to Court through his lawyer Suranga Jayawardena today (28).

Five A/L students drown in Jaffna

At least five students drowned in the seas off Mandative in Jaffna when the boat they were travelling in capsized this afternoon, police said.

They said the bodies of five students were recovered and taken to hospital while the navy and police are searching for another student who went missing.
