Avant Garde chief Nissanka Senadipathi arrested

Avant-Garde Maritime Security Limited Chairman Nissanka Senadhipathi was arrested by the Bribery Commission a short while ago. 

He was arrested after he came to the commission to record a statement over the Avant-Garde issue.

UNP 70th anniversary today

The UNP marks its 70th anniversary today. The party’s anniversary rally is scheduled to be held at Campbell Park in Colombo on Sept. 10 from 9.00 am with President Maithripala Sirisena as the Chief Guest.

Pirith was chanted at the UNP headquarters, Sirikotha, on Sunday and an alms giving to 70 bhikkhus was held yesterday. A special working committee meeting of the party is scheduled to be held today at Sirikotha.

The UNP was founded on 6 September 1946 by the late D. S. Senanayake after resigning from the Ceylon National Congress. The UNP has been in power from 1947 to 1956, from 1965 to 1970, from 1977 to 1994 and from 2001 to 2004 and from 2015 to date.

Bandaragama businessman disappears in Trincomalee

Police have launched an investigation into the disappearance of a businessman, who had gone to Trincomalee to participate in the auction of gold jewellery, held at Bank of Ceylon branch on 4 September.

Mohammad Nasrin, aged 35, had arrived in Trincomalee with several other businessmen.

Nasrin is a resident of Bandaragama. He is said to frequent gold jewellery auctions across the country. He had taken lodging at a hotel in Kantale and was carrying close to Rs 10 million, according to a complaint lodged by his companions.

Those who had arrived with Nasrin state that they all arrived at the auction together and Nasrin had left the building between 2.15 and 2.45 p.m. to buy a bottle of water. He had not returned to the auction after that. His companions, worried by his absence, had lodged a complaint with Trincomalee Police.

Trincomalee Police have questioned those who arrived with Nasrin and are looking at other clues, a spokesman for the Police said.

Thajudeen case: CCTV footage unclear

The head of lecturers at British Columbia Technical Institute in Canada, David Mackie, issuing a special report, had stated the CCTV camera footage, captured on the route a for the last time by murdered rugby player Wasim Thajudeen, was unclear and hence it was difficult to either identify the number of the vehicle or those in the vehicle which had followed the victim's car.

A special CID team had taken 10 CDs containing the said CCTV camera footage to Canada recently.

Later, the CID had obtained a report having submitted the CDs for the perusal of David Mackie at the said institute in Vancouver.
Mackie had issued his report based on five probabilities related to the CDs and the CCTV camera footage.

He had noted that when recording the CCTV camera footage and whilst turning them to CDs certain scenes could have been erased or deleted due to the resultant pressure brought about, and that due to the power of the headlights of the vehicle the vehicle number was not visible.

Mackie had further noted that even after having zoomed in the CCTV camera footage it was difficult to clearly decipher the assailants who had followed the victim's car.

The said report has already been submitted to Colombo Additional Magistrate Nishantha Peiris by the CID.

Maskeliya child dunked in boiling water

A seven-year-old boy at an estate in Maskeliya was burned by his stepmother yesterday.Police said neighbours had responded to the boy’s incessant cries and called the Police when the found him grievously injured.

His stepmother hand dunked his hands and face in boiling water, causing the boy immense pain and injuries.Police said investigations revealed that the boy’s parents were divorced and that he lived with his father and stepmother.

They said the boy was subject to much abuse at the hands of his stepmother.Police said they would arrest the boy’s stepmother and grandmother in relation to the incident.


Alleged assault of Sri Lankan envoy to Malaysia

KUALA LUMPUR: Police have arrested five people over Sunday’s assault on Sri Lanka's High Commissioner to Malaysia, Ibrahim Sahib Ansar.

 Police have also identified four more suspects involved in the incident at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport, and are working to trace their whereabouts. The men, aged between 27 and 56, are being held under the Security Offences (Special Measures) Act.

Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar said Police are also probing local groups that have demonstrated support for the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE).

These groups had protested the presence of former the Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa to Malaysia. The former President returned to Sri Lanka today.

 The Inspector-General of Police said their investigation would also focus on identifying any links to the LTTE, including financially supporting them in the fight against the Sri Lankan government. The five suspects were picked up in Dengkil, Ipoh and in KL, in an operation that began yesterday.

Lasantha’s remains to be exhumed

The body of former Sunday Leader Editor, Lasantha Wickrematunge, will be exhumed in the coming week, according to reliable sources.

His grave, at the Borella Cemetery, has been provided with Police protection, so that there will be no opportunity for anyone attempting to tamper with the remains.

Wickrematunge was assassinated on 8 January 2009 after being on Amnesty International's endangered list since 1998, when anti-tank shells were fired at his house. In 2010, Wickrematunge was declared a World Press Freedom Hero by the International Press Institute.

Police mother breastfeeds abandoned child

A story of a woman constable volunteering to save an abandoned four-month-old baby girl from starving to death by breastfeeding the latter while waiting for paramedics is reported from Wellawaya.

WPC 1307 W.M. Ramya breasted the baby girl who had been brought to the police station with three of her sisters after they had been abandoned by their mother who swallowed poison.

The four children were abandoned by their mother who left a suicide note requesting others to either bring them up or hand them over to an orphanage. The 28-year-old mother from Ethiliwewa, Maha Aragama was found unconscious by neighbours who rushed her to the Moneragala General Hospital. Her four children aged twelve, eight, two and four months. The eldest daughter on returning from school on Friday found that her mother was missing.

On seeing the letter written by her mother, the girl raised alarm and her grandmother with the help of thier neighbours found the mother who was in a critical condition. They took her to hospital.

The grandmother came to the police station with the children to give a statement on the incident. The baby used to breast milk did not consume anything else and kept crying until WPC Ramya volunteered to breastfeed her.

Later the mother of the children’s father promised that she would care for the four children till the recovery of their mother. The father of the children had left the family about a year back and the mother had raised the children by attending to daily wage work, police said.
