Lankan PHD student from NZ allegedly killed by ex-husband


A Victoria University of Wellington PhD student has been killed in Weliweriya, allegedly by her former husband, two days after arriving from New Zealand.

Apsara Wimalasiri died last Sunday in the town of Weliweriya during a short holiday to visit family and take part in the Galle Face protests.

The 33-year-old moved to Wellington in 2020, completing a masters by thesis, before moving on to become a PhD candidate at the university’s School of Linguistics and Applied Language Studies on a full scholarship.

Jacqueline Fernandez Assets Seized


A Rs 7-crore fixed deposit under actor Jacqueline Fernandez's name has been attached as part of the investigation into the Rs 200-crore money laundering case against alleged conman Sukesh Chandrashekhar, sources have said.

The Enforcement Directorate has attached assets worth Rs 7.27 crore - this includes the Rs 7.12-crore fixed deposit and an amount of Rs 15 lakh that was paid by Chandrashekhar to a script writer on the actor's behalf, the NDTV reported.

Inflation continues to rise to 29.8% in April


Headline inflation, as measured by the year-on-year (Y-o-Y) change in the Colombo Consumer Price Index (CCPI, 2013=100) increased to 29.8% in April 2022 from 18.7% in March 2022, CBSL states.

This increase in Y-o-Y inflation was driven by the monthly increases of both Food and Non-Food categories. Subsequently, Food inflation (Y-o-Y) increased to 46.6% in April 2022 from 30.2% in March 2022, while Non-Food inflation (Y-o-Y) increased to 22.0% in April 2022 from 13.4% in March 2022.

Sannasgala summoned to court over 2018 complaint


Colombo Additional Magistrate Manjula Tilakaratne has issued notices to popular lecturer and activist Upul Shantha Sannasgala and Srinath Chathuranga to appear in court on the 20th of May in connection with the alleged printing and distribution of a book titled ‘Budunge Rasthiyaduwa’.

Tamil Nadu CM announces major relief aid for "All Sri Lankans"


Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly on Friday (29) unanimously adopted a separate resolution seeking permission from the Central Government of India to provide assistance to Sri Lankans amid the ongoing economic crisis in the country.

The resolution was moved by Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin after the prevailing national crisis in Sri Lanka was taken up for discussion at the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly.

Four cops including former Kegalle SSP remanded


Former SSP for Kegalle K. B. Keerthiratne was ordered to be remanded until the 6th of May 2022, by Colombo Additional Magistrate Shalini Perera on Friday (29).

SSP Keerthiratne was arrested by the Criminal Investigations Department on Thursday (28) evening, and he was ordered to be remanded after the Additional Magistrate inspected his condition at the Police Hospital in Narahenpita, where he was receiving treatment.

Sri Lanka to make payments for imports through banking system mandatory


Finance Ministry will issue a new gazette notification under the Import and Export Control Act, making all payments on imports to Sri Lanka through a banking system compulsory, says the Central Bank Governor.

Addressing a special media briefing this evening, Dr. Nandalal Weerasinghe said several measures will be taken by the Finance Ministry and the Central Bank to curb the transactions in foreign exchange outside the banking system.
