Videos have emerged on social media showing SDIG Deshabandu Tennakoon being attacked by protestors demanding an explanation as to who gave orders to attack protesters yesterday.

Two including Police officer dead following clashes in Colombo


Two persons including a Police officer have died following clashes reported in Colombo yesterday.

The Police officer was attached to the security team deployed to Temple Trees.

The Colombo National Hospital said an 80-year-old also died upon admission to the hospital. He has reportedly died of a heart attack.

IGP instructed senior cops to ignore mobs


Inspector General of Police (IGP) Chandana D. Wickramaratne, acting on instructions from Public Security Ministry Secretary (Retd.) Maj. Gen. Jagath Alwis, had instructed senior Police officials, including Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) – Colombo Central Nishantha Chandrasekara not to use water cannons and tear gas to disperse supporters of the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) who attacked peaceful protesters in front of the Temple Trees and the Galle Face Green yesterday (9), reliably learnt.

Island wide curfew extended till 7am on Wednesday

Curfew, that is currently in effect across the country, has been extended till 7am on Wednesday (11). Curfew was imposed according to provisions of the Article 16 of the Public Security Ordinance. Accordingly, no one will be permitted to remain on public roads, railway lines, parks, playgrounds, or public beaches, except under the authority of a written permit issued by an authorising officer.

Mahinda Rajapaksa resigns as PM

Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa sent his letter of resignation to President Gotabaya Rajapaksa yesterday (9) after violent scenes were witnessed in Colombo.

Speaking to The Morning, Prime Minister’s Secretary Rohan Weliwita confirmed that the letter was sent to the President yesterday evening.

Over 100 hospitalized amidst tensions at Galle Face

At least 141 people have been admitted to the Colombo National Hospital following the violent situation that erupted near Temple Trees and spread out to the Galle Face Green protest site and other parts of the country.

An unruly group of SLPP supporters today (May 09) attacked the GotaGoGama anti-government protest site set up at the Galle Face Green.

President calls Sajith to form Govt


President Gotabaya Rajapaksa has asked the Prime Minister-led Cabinet to resign and pave the way to form a national programme to stabilise the country ending the current crises, Mass Media Minister, Dr. Nalaka Godahewa told the media yesterday (08).

He also said, the Prime Minister’s decision to resign would either be made today or in the coming few days.

“Once the Prime Minister resigns the Cabinet stands automatically dissolved. The President requested us to resign to end this political stalemate,” he added.

Prime Minister’s resignation doubtful - Dayasiri

General Secretary of the SLFP and former Minister Dayasiri Jayasekara expressed doubts about the proposed statement to be made by Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa today before his resignation as there was a move to stage a protest by a few former SLPP pradeshiya saba members before the Presidential Secretariat demanding the premier not to resign.

‘I have information that Prime Minister Rajapaksa had summoned a few selected number of former PS members to Temple Trees and told them to stage a protest. If this happens today, the modus operandi is to say that ‘How I can resign, (sic) when people ask me not to do so?’.
